Two Ways It Works for You
The Mischief 58mm portafilter is flexible on two fronts at once. It converts between bottomless and double spout by hand, and it fits both La Marzocco and E61 group heads — so it moves with you whether you change how you brew or what you brew on.
Bottomless Mode
Remove the spouts and you can watch the extraction from underneath. This is the fastest way to see what's actually happening in the basket:
- Channelling shows up immediately as jets or sprays shooting sideways
- Uneven tamping reveals itself as coffee emerging from one side first
- Correct extraction looks like a single steady stream forming in the centre
None of this is visible through a spouted portafilter. If you're dialling in a new coffee or chasing an inconsistent shot, bottomless is how you find the problem.
Double Spout Mode
Thread the spouts back on and you can split the shot into two cups at once — practical when you're serving two people, or comparing the same shot side by side. The spouts also cut down splashing and keep the pour directed, which matters on a busy counter.
Fits Both Group Head Standards
The same portafilter works on La Marzocco machines and on the E61 group head used across a wide range of prosumer machines. If you upgrade or change machines later, it likely still fits — and if you run both at home and in a café, one portafilter covers you.
